Thanks in advance for helping this landlubber with a question.

If a panamax container carrier wants to navigate from Aden to Cochin port, how would it plan a course?

a) Set a direct course to Cochin
b) Follow the heavily used 'sea lane' used by ships that go around Sri Lanka, and stay with it to the maximum distance, before turning left to go to Cochin.
c)Since the Laccadive islands are somewhere in the middle, follow the 'sea lane' till you clear them and then turn left.

Motivation for the question: There are lots of discussion happening in this part of the world about the merits of the proposed Vizhinjam port, and one of the highlights is its closeness to the "sea lanes". Is that real or a myth?

Can anyone help? thank you.

Landlubber's Question about navigation 18 Jun 2015 09:17 #4424

The proposed Vizhinjam port is just 10 nautical miles from the International Shipping Lane. The Vizhinjam port is endowed with a natural seawater depth of up to 24 m as close as one nautical mile from the seacoast. Due to this natural depth, Vizhinjam can attract the largest container vessels currently in operation and also the future mega container carriers, thus the Site needs minimal capital dredging thus the project cost and maintenance cost will be minimum.

But as far as the the proximity of the port is concerned, the google Maps show that it is quite far from the Main shipping lanes and it is contrary to the Brochure of the Port(as attached).

Dear Mr. Tiwari, thank you very much for indulging in the PM discussion. For the sake of the general audience, allow me to post the excerpts:

Question: Once again, the question is purely technical. For a moment, assume that there is enough cargo volume. In that case, will a panamax ship set a direct course to Cochin (in order to minimise cost), or follow the "shipping lane" as much as possible and make a 90 degree turn?

Answer: Yes it can set a direct course.
You also very rightly said: The ships can always do that without any problem but the real question is that will the port have enough cargo to lure big ships and shipping lines to its harbours and what edge it plans to make itself more competetive and then again a new question will arrive that will the indian economy will grow at that pace to keep exporting more and more goods to the world.

Once again, thank you very much for the discussion.
