Human centric news of Maritime Community, posted by AdminSailor and other members.
In port arrival or departure of vessels, though the master is legally responsible for the acts and safe berthing and passage planning of the ship, but practically many of them have confidence on Pilots and on their competency and they may not have another choice but to follow the advice of Pilots.
So how far a Pilot should be held co-responsible for any maritime accident, as it is him/her,who was sent by the port as an expert to guide the Master and it was him who indirectly represents the Port.
We hear about Maritime casualty on nearly daily basis from one part of the world or another, where Pilots have given bad advice to Masters and brunt of the consequences has to be taken by the Master and ship owners only.
Why should not the Port and Pilots be also held responsible. The news link below instigates us to discuss the thorny issue of the Pilot-master/ Port-ship relations....
Even now with hightened safety inspection regimes by Flag and port state controls...some ships are in pathetic conditions. I have personally experienced the lack lustre attitute of class surveyors when they conme onboard for inspections.......This news is apalling....God save us from such ships....
