Icebreaker stuck in ice


The "Aurora Australis" got stuck in heavy sea-ice off the Antarctic coast about 180 nautical miles off the Davis station while attempting to head back to Hobart after a summer mission. The icebreeaking supply vessel surrounded by around 60 nautical miles of heavy sea-ice. The 24 people on board were safe and well. The ship had departed from Hobart for its first voyage of the season in mid-October and was due back on November 16, 2013, but the stranding has forced the Australian Antarctic Division to reschedule its summer program, combining missions to Macquarie Island and Casey station.
