As professional seafarers, we have seen a gradual reduction in the strength of ship’s staff, which on one hand has increased the crew’s productivity in normal circumstances but its not unusual to find ourselves in limbo, when a little deviation from normal routine happens, like more frequent port calls, restricted water passages, etc.
In addition to that, and in the manner of “Kid’s peeing competition” management companies are making their shipboard management system more complicated and asking for more rigorous duties of ship’s staff for even normal operations, like in a normal anchorage the Engine room can be unmanned but many companies are making SMS rules which call for Engine room to be manned in Anchorage. This leaves thinly staffed crew to be overworked, while companies then, also insist to comply fully, the Rest hour regulation of the MLC.
