The effect of Ship's derrick on the stability of the ship depends on the Size of the Ship's Derrick and the weight it lifts.
Thus the extent of effect of Derrick operation on the Ship will vary on the Type of Ship and the cargo.
Say it's a heavy lift Ship, which carry huge project cargo then the crane operation will have a major effect on its stability. While in a Bulk carrier it will be not that much evident.
Effect on Metacentric Height GM
As soon as the Cargo which till now was loaded on ship is lifted for being Discharged, the GM reduces, since the Weight gets transferred to the Derrick and comes to a new reduced value when the cargo is kept on shore.
For loading operation when the cargo is picked from shore side the weight load comes on derrick head and GM decreases momentarily till it is kept inside the Hold, when the GM increases (as more weight is loaded and ship sinks a little, shifting position of Metacenter, M
Heeling Effect due to Crane operation
The crane swings with the cargo to do loading and unloading of ship. This load on the end of the Jib /Derrick of the crane, applies a moment to the ship's hull.
Effect on stability due to loading of ore bulk
When the ore is loaded in bulk in a bulk carrier, the ship's center of Gravity, G lowers and the GM increases. This also makes the ship a bit "stiff", i.e she will roll more fast. (her rolling time will decrease)
And if the loaded ore is very heavy (like iron ore) then the GM will be very high and the ship will roll heavily in the Sea. To counter this the GM is reduced by taking water ballast in the Top Side Tanks ,TST of the bulk carriers, provided it does not overload the ship.
