Once I sailed with me a chief mate from Pakistan who later became a good friend of mine, told me a bizarre story happened with him.
He was transferred from a ship calling Indian port of Vishakhapatnam , as there somebody (must have been from Authorities) has objected with charterer for the presence of this pakistani gentleman officer and that protest reached to the managers and finally he got transferred to my ship(to the good luck of him this ship was then trading in South americas..,Wow).
Till then we were knowing that pakistani crew member will not get shore leave in India. But then it was evident that the Indian authorities will not even let them in Indian port calling ships,...Amazing.
I would like to ask our countrymen that if a terrorist would have to come from Pakistan to attack. He would definitely not come disguised as a ship crew member, because our shoreline is Quite porous to anyone to land in India and attack as Ajmal kasab & Co. had done in Mumbai.(Sending men in the form of seafarer would be very costly and tricky affair and they would have to hire James bond for the job)
A seafarer happen to be one of the most documented Professional in today's world, with tens of certificates and licenses and having his whole whereabout and professional history verified by numerous agencies from time to time.
It is ridiculous if we only talk big about human rights and deprive a common, hard working seafarer of his right of Shore leave.
